Plans of the Square, showing the proposed location of the War Memorial and the proposed deviation of the railway lines. The Palmerston North and Districts Soldiers Memorial Fund raised funds for the erection of a memorial to local residents who were killed during World War One. The memorial was erected in The Square in 1926.
