Coloured plans on wax paper of the Manawatu Lower Gorge Bridge dated 1897.
Sheet 1 shows: a plan of the river; elevation of the bridge; cylinders & bracing; land piers. Scale is 1" = 120 ft for river plan & 30 ft to 1 inch for elevation. Drawn by C Brox, 1897.
Sheet 2 shows: elevation of bridge; land piers; roller plates; top of top plates section of land pier on rollers; cross section of truss at FL; section of centre pier (fixed); rollers on cylinders; plan of rollers and frame; upper & lower boom. Scale for general drawing is 1/4 = 1 ft. Scale for details 1 1/2 = 1 ft.
Sheet 3 shows: plan of cylinder. Scale for general drawing is 1/2 = 1 ft. Scale for details 1 1/2 = 1 ft.
This bridge was situated at Ashhurst and was built in 1909, to replace a bridge which had been destroyed by a flood in 1895. The N.Z Gazette of 1 November 1900, No 92 page 1986 vested control of this bridge inj the Manchester Road Board, but required the Palmerston North Borough Council to contribute to the cost of maintaining the structure.
