G L Adkin was a well known historian of the Levin District and the author of 'Horowhenua: Its Maori placenames and their topographic and historical background', Dept. of Internal Affairs, 1948. The 1860 map referred to by Adkin is C M Igglesden’s plan showing the Ahuaturanga or Upper Manawatu, the Oroua and the Awa Hou blocks-Manawatu District, Province of Wellington (RP 418A, SO10604), held by the Dept of Lands and Survey Wellington. The 1859 survey map referred to Adkin is J T Stewart’s Ahuaturanga or Upper Manawatu and Oroua Blocks of Land (RP 418, SO 10603, held by the Dept of Lands and Survey, Wellington.
Annotated as follows: This map is based on a half-scale copy (dated 1860) of JT Stewart's 2 inches to 1 mile survey of 1859. The additional names and data (shown here-on-in in red) are from other maps by JT Stewart and from other sources, GL Adkin, Nov 1956.
