Palmerston North, Manawatu. Scale: 10 chains to 1 inch. Henry Jackson, Chief Surveyor. Photo lithographed at the Govt. Printing Office, Wellington, NZ by H. Deveril. This is an original print from the photo lithograph process of the 1870s. Unfortunately, it has been crudely mounted on poor quality card in recent years. The provenance of this print is unknown, but it has been in the possession of Palmerston North City Council for many years. IT was carefully redrawn in the early 1960s by VRC Warren (a draughtsman in the Town Planning Office) and his tracing is filed as plan 18/M/2 in the plan filing system created by the City Planning Department during the 1970s and now (December 1995) held by the Map Officer, Land Information Section, City Enterprises Unit, PN City Council. The date "1872" has been added to this print in black ink in recent years, but this date is incorrect. It appears that this plan was drawn in 1874 or 1875, for it shows "Feilding’s Barracks" on section 612 (a building erected to accommodate the emigrants en route to Feilding and the Manchester Block in 1874). A copy of this plan is held by National Archives, Wellington (W PW5410), where it has been assigned the date "c1875". A photocopy of this National Archives print is held in this map collection. Billens & Verry’s book, ‘From Swamp to City’ (1937), page 24, indicates that a cop of this plan was in the possession of Mr W.A. Milverton of Palmerston North in 1937. Mr Milverton was of the opinion that the plan was prepared in 1875.
